Smart appliance industry applies EEBus Data Model SPINE for smart use of energy. At the European Utility Week on the subject Consumer Energy Management, Whirlpool, the number one major appliance manufacturer released that they fully support the SPINE data models for white goods which is standardized in the European Smart Appliance Standard prEN 50631.

EEBus and Energy@home demonstrate consumer energy management and convergence of the communication standards together with ESMIG. Mark van Stiphout (EC, DG Energy, Deputy Head of Unit new energy technologies and innovation), welcomed the successful demonstration of EEBus and was interested in the further work of the initiative.


REnnovates uses the Universal Smart Energy Framework (USEF) to deploy flexibility in order to avoid grid issues on a district level. The test phase (December 2016) for the implementation of USEF turned out to be successful.

How does it work?

Our test-configuration is (now) able to collect prognosis data from the households and combine these into a forecast per congestion point which we call D-prognosis. This D-prognosis is sent to the DSO. In case flexibility is needed by the DSO, it sends a flexibility request, which will be answered with a flexibility offer. This offer in turn is ordered by the DSO using a flexibility order, resulting in a new D-prognosis. In this new D-prognosis, the ordered flexibility is used to avoid congestion. The test shows a successful communication between Stedin, Enervalis and VITO, the involved parties.

In the Rennovates-project devices from various brands and domains were integrated. The successful integration demonstrates the value of the EEBus SPINE as common language of the IoT. The engineers of KEO leveraged a Modbus connection to network the smart EEBus SPINE speaking devices.

EEBus is the leading European initiative for the standardization when it comes to the smart use of energy. The standard has had a successful year 2016 with various industries having implemented the EEBus on their roadmaps.
